Nick Griffin, the hapless leader of what is left of the BNP, has proved yet again what a tactless host he is.

Griffin is currently touring London and the South East with a group of Flemish ultra-nationalists from the far-right Vlaams Belang (VB), the successor to the Vlaams Blok, which was dissolved in November 2004 as a result of a court case concerning its racism.

Griffin is hoping that appearing on BNP TV flanked by foreign guests will somehow make him look more important than he is and help detract attention from the disintegration of his own party for which he and he alone is responsible.

In his latest video, recorded for the BNP website, Griffin outlines his recent jolly to Dover with Filip Dewinter, one of the VB MPs and a senior figure in the party. He and Griffin had just been enjoying a pint and some fish and chips. You would think that Griffin had more pressing concerns to attend to but there you go. Following their meal Griffin took Dewinter to the beach to show him some of the coastal defences that were erected to repel the Nazis in the event of an invasion which, in 1940, looked imminent. Dewinter tried to look interested while Griffin prattled on, puffed up with pretended pride. Griffin appears to have forgotten, however, that the VB has its roots in the politics of Nazi collaboration in Belgium. Doh!

Griffin’s newfound pride in the doughty defence of Britain undertaken in the dark days of 1940 stands in stark contrast to much of his early political career which had been spent praising the Waffen-SS and denying the Holocaust. So much for patriotism.

The guns of The EDL

When right wing extremist Anders Breivik went on his murder spree in Oslo last month, attention predictably turned to England and the far-right extremist English Defence League (EDL), the organisation that inspired the killer.

Despite claiming that his organisation had no official contacts with Breivik and that he condemned the actions of the mass murderer, EDL leader Stephen Yaxley-Lennon claimed in a number of interviews with journalists that in his opinion, the UK was only five years away from the same sort of right wing outrage happening here.

Up and down the country for the last two years we have witnessed dozens of attacks on Muslim and progressive communities as Lennon's private army of racists grew further and further out of control even encouraged fleetingly, by sections of the national media.

News broke last week that finally, the EDL was to be monitored by the same counter terror unit set up after the 7/7 terror attacks. Hope Not Hate has long called for the EDL to be monitored in the same way that Islamic terror groups are.

We are now publishing these photographs of senior EDL members and activists to prove once and for all for any doubters, that the EDL are not just a pressure group with legitimate concerns about radical Islam. They are the flip side of the same coin.

Stephen Yaxley-Lennon says we are five years away from a Breivik styled massacre here. We believe they are already a terror group in the making.

Met police request a ban

This afternoon the Metropolitan Police is formally requesting a ban on the EDL march in Tower Hamlets on 3 September. It seems an almost certainty that the Home Secretary will agree to the request.

This decision is a victory for common sense. The EDL clearly intended to use the proposed march to bring violence and disorder to the streets of Tower Hamlets. Their plan has been foiled.

While the EDL might still decide to hold a static protest they will not now be able to march through residential areas and, most importantly, march past the East London mosque. A static protest will be far easier to police and it will probably also discourage a lot of EDL supporters from travelling.

While we await the formal decision from the Home Secretary I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the 25,300 people who signed our petition, the hundreds of people who donated to the campaign fund and the dozens of people who came out campaigning with us in Tower Hamlets.

John Walker

We are hearing news that former BNP treasurer John Walker has been sacked today.

Walker who was the press officer to the two BNP MEPs had already resigned from the party in disgust at the behaviour of Nick Griffin and others in the leadership apparently received his marching orders via an email sent from party manager Adam Walker.

John Walker claims his dismissal followed revelations made by himself relating to the the ever growing influence Pat Harrington held over the BNP.

Labelling the BNP leadership as cretins earlier this month,Walker claims he has referred the matter for legal advice with the intention of taking the matter further.

This appears to be just the start of yet another "Night of the Long Knives" within the BNP, following the recent leadership election,which Nick Griffin won by a narrow nine votes.

Walker was a critic of the Griffin leadership,and laid his support firmly behind the challenger Andrew Brons.

Another Griffin critic due before the BNP disciplinary team in none other than far right veteran Martin Wingfield.

Wingfield,European Communications & Campaigns Officer and former editor of the BNP newspaper Voice of Freedom is due for his disciplinary hearing at the end of this month.

I'm hearing reports that unlike his political hero Colonel Gaddafi, Nick Griffin has managed to survive another day- but not such good news for the BNP's party manager Adam Walker.

Walker is currently up on charges relating to alleged drink driving and chasing youngsters around with a knife. Not bad for a former teacher some might say!

Today I've heard from a good source that Walker's elevation to the higher echelons of the sycophants who currently surround and protect their glorious leader finally found its price.

Approximately £21,000 it has just cost Walker I'm told, including costs. A court ruled that it was Walker who should foot the bill for the outstanding monies owed to the BNP's former pin-up boy Mark Collett.

People may recall the circumstances surrounding Collett's departure from the party last year, when it was alleged by the Griffin camp that he had among other things, conspired to murder Griffin.

Today Collett had his day in court. Durham County Court to be precise. Poor Adam Walker, facing a possible driving ban was told he now has to foot the bill for the BNP's gung-ho attitude towards the law. After his other "incident", he does not even have his old teaching job to fall back on.

20,000 barrier broken

We’ve now collected over 20,000 names for our petition to stop the EDL march through Tower Hamlets. This is an amazing acheievement and reflects the fear of what might happen if the EDL march through this predominantly Muslim area of London.

The EDL wants to march along Commercial Street in Shoreditch and then turn left into Whitechapel Road and past the East London mosque. This is a recipe for disaster and the EDL knows it. This is totally provocative and is likely to result in mass disorder.

We will be handing our petition to the Metropolitan Police this week. We understand that politicians in the Home Office and the Mayor’s office now accept the need for a ban but an application has to come from the Metropolitan Police. So far they have resisted and have pointed to the fact that they have never in their history asked for a ban. These, however, are exceptional circumstances and in a week when the police struggled to keep order on the streets of London it seems absolutely ridiculous for them now to allow a march that could well lead to disorder.

It is fantastic news that we’ve gone through the 20,000 mark but we need more. Our new target is 25,000.

A fantastic day

I've just got home from a long but very rewarding day in Tower Hamlets. Over 70 people came out to help today, many of them for the first time, and we collected over 4,000 new signatures.

About 20,000 people have now signed the petition so we are now raising our target to 25,000 - so that's another 5,000 in the next four days.

Telford round up

Against the background of the terrible events witnessed in several parts of the country over the last week, the last thing anywhere needed was the EDL to raise their ugly heads again.

Unfortunately the EDL had a planned march booked for today resulting in the cancellation of the AFC Telford v Luton football match and yet again the closure of most of the city centre and the disruption of people's everyday lives. The march was cancelled yesterday but the actual demo was allowed to go ahead.

As it was it proved to be a bit of a damp squib.

The police estimate that 300 EDL supporters turned up, people actually inside the demo put the numbers much lower at between 100 and 150. A counter demo seemed to attract a similar number.

There were a few minor scuffles and the police reported five arrests for minor offences. Bottles were thrown at police and a couple of bright sparks thought it would be a good idea to try and open the doors to a police dog van. Luckily for them, they failed.

Later, there has been reports of sporadic clashes in the town.

Almost 60 HOPE not hate supporters have been out petitioning in Tower Hamlets today in support of our call for the EDL demo to be banned. 1,400 signatures have already been collected today, taking our overall total to almost 18,000.

The response from local people has been overwhelmingly positive.

More teams are going out again this afternoon and further campaign sessions are planned for tomorrow.

News has just come in that the Police in Shropshire have banned the EDL from marching there this weekend.

This comes after the police also asked for the Blue Square Premier league football match between Telford and Luton Town to be postponed.

There's no point beating around the bush. We know why this has happened: It is because the EDL are a travelling band of football thugs that no town or city in their right mind would want marching up and down their streets when decent people are trying to go about their daily lives.

The Home Secretary Theresa May says that she stopped the march to protect "communities and properties".

Perhaps she could now do the people of Tower Hamlets the same favour?

Inching ever closer

Our petition against the EDL march in Tower Hamlets now stands at 17,636. It's good but we need a lot more.

David Cameron described the EDL as 'sick' in the emergency Commons debate yesterday but sidestepped a question on whether their march should be banned. This follows a letter a Home Office minister recently wrote to the two Tower Hamlets MPs who removed themselves from the decision-making process and passed the buck to the police.

The politicians might try to shirk responsibility but the people of Tower Hamlets are looking for some political leadership. After the appalling events of the past few days it is time the authorities came out and protected local communities. It is all very well talking about a ‘broken’ and ‘sick’ society but we want our politicians to lead. They will be held responsible if they let us down again.

We will be handing in the petition next week together with a detailed briefing explaining why we believe the EDL march should be banned. It is vitally important that we get as many names on the petition before then so we can demonstrate the strength of feeling.

Police madness

I've just heard news that Saturday's Telford v Luton football match has been called off because of a EDL demonstration in the town on the same day. A statement on the Telford FC website claims the match has been called off at the request of West Mercia Police.

This comes after several other football matches that have been called off this week because of the trouble, including England's friendly against Holland.

And yet the Metropolitan Police are still refusing to ban the EDL march in Tower Hamlets on 3 September.

This is complete madness. Why are football matches being cancelled to allow a couple of hundreds racists the right to parade their hatred in our communities? Why do the Met think it's ok to cancel sporting events in the capital and shut shopping centres but allow our communities to burn?

The police have to ban this incendary march immediately.

Over 15,000 people have now signed our petition. We are looking to have over 20,000 by early next week when we hand in our petition. Please sign it and encourage all your friends to do likewise.

We are all Norwegian

A couple of days ago I went to the Norwegian Embassy to hand in our book of condolences in memory of those who had lost their lives in the appalling massacres last month.

Over 10,000 HOPE not hate supporters sent in messages which clearly reflects the general outpouring of sympathy and solidarity following the killings. I expressed our condolences to Embassy staff but also how so many of our supporters were impressed with how Norwegians have stood firmly together in the face of hate. In light of the appalling events in the UK this week, and attempts by the BNP and EDL to divide communities, it is an important demonstration of unity that we should follow.

On behalf of the HOPE not hate team I would like to thank everyone who sent in messages for our book. We read every single message as we put the two books together and we were deeply moved. There were so many messages, including several from Norwegians living in the UK and people who had relatives and friends living out there.

Once again, you have done us all proud and reminded us that HOPE can always triumph over hate.

With our target of getting 5,000 from local residents in Tower Halmets over the weekend we are now upping our target to 20,000.

It is vital we get this march of hate banned. The EDL want to march past East London mosque in what is a clear attempt to intimidate and incite violence. We cannot let this happen.

An amazing response

Over 2,500 people have signed our petition against the EDL march in Tower Hamlets since I sent out my email just over four hours ago. This comes on top of the thousands who have already signed it.

This reflects the widespread opposition and fear to the EDL marching through one of Britain's biggest Muslim communities.

The police have so far resisted attempts to ban the march and last week they met EDL representatives to agree a route. Let's hope that a combination of this week's riots and our petition can force them to change their minds.

In his dreams

Nick Griffin and the BNP have finally got their acts together in a bid to take advantage of the riots that have affected so many communities over recent days. Unsurprising he is trying to racialise the problems by blaming it all on 'blacks' (oh and the Jews, who he claimed were behind the trouble in Tottenham) and saying that it was obviously a consequence of a multicultural society.

Quite apart from pretending that the white folk of this country have never rioted or caused any crime, Griffin conveniently ignores the involvement of white people in this recent trouble, that all of us – regardless of our colour – suffered from the violence and looting, and that in many parts of the country it was black and Asian people who stood in the way of the troublemakers.

So Griffin first responded to the riots by predictably asking people for money and now he has announced the party's 'biggest ever day of action' this Saturday. Revealing his intentions on Twitter, Griffin told supporters that each party 'group' should visit three shopping centres on Saturday while every branch should cover six.

Given that the party is on its knees, its membership halved in a year and what remains is demoralised and internally split, it is hard to imagine any serious BNP mobilisation this weekend. The turnout will be further hindered by the fact that Griffin hasn't actually supplied branches with any leaflets but left them to print them themselves.

Griffin seems to do most of his political campaigning these days on Twitter. I guess that means that the numerous companies to which the BNP owes money can never actually find him.

EDL liars

It's bad enough that the EDL promise to 'defend' our communities but fairly low when they take the credit for the work of others.

The EDL has just used a photo of the broom army in Clapham and claimed that their members were involved. Quite rightly this has infuriated those actually there as they want nothing to do with the EDL.

Stop a riot

In just a few weeks time the English Defence League intend to march through Tower Hamlets. They want to peddle their hatred along Whitechapel Road and directly past the East London mosque. There could be nothing more incendiary to the local Muslim community.

Yet astonishingly, given everything that London has experienced in recent days, the Metropolitan Police are still willing to give this EDL hate march the green light. I fear that if the EDL are allowed to march, there will be chaos and violence.

There’s no point in pretending otherwise. This is why we are demanding that the police ban this march. We’ve produced a short video to emphasis the threat.

Beware the racist vigilantes

The news that the EDL is promising to come out on the streets to defend our communities from rioters should be met with the derision and contempt it deserves. Yesterday EDL leader Stephen Yaxley-Lennon told the press that as many as 1,000 EDL supporters would patrol the streets in towns and cities across Britain.

This is the same Stephen Yaxley-Lennon who a fortnight ago was convicted for leading a brawl involving 100 football fans. The court heard how Lennon led Luton supporters into battle with the cry “EDL till I die” as they clashed with Newport County fans.

Rather than apologise for his antisocial behaviour the thug simply moaned about living in a police state.

A long list of his previous convictions was read out in court, including a spell in prison for assaulting a police officer.

The EDL as a group is no better. Hundreds have been arrested at its demonstrations across the country, many for violence against the public and the police. Some have also been involved in firebombing mosques and damaging other buildings. Their thuggery and violent protests have cost the British taxpayer over £10m.

The EDL is the last thing our communities need and it is time the media stopped treating Lennon as a legitimate political spokesman rather than a thug who leads a violent and racist gang.

A warning for the police

Last night's disturbances in Tottenham should serve as a warning to the police about the dangers of allowing the English Defence League to march in Tower Hamlets on 3 September. The burntout buildings and cars were caused by a couple of hundred people. In a few weeks time we could see as many as 1,000 EDL racists being met by thousands of angry locals.

I understand that the Met Police have recently been in negotiations with the EDL about a demo route and supporters of the far right group are boasting on the internet that they are going to be allowed to march past the East London mosque. I can't imagine anything more inflammatory and likely to cause a violent reaction.

The Home Secretary meanwhile seems to be waiting until mid-August before finalising her decision.

We are campaigning hard for a ban because we fear what could happen if the EDL march past the East London mosque. If they are allowed to do so then those who have given them the go-ahead will have to take full responsibility for any disorder that might result.

Selling like hotcakes

Friday night saw my colleague Matthew Collins launch his book, Hate. It proved to be a long but very enjoyable night and was an opportunity to catch up with some old friends. I saw Matthew interviewed on Sky yesterday morning and his red eyes said it all.

Anyway, the book is selling really well. We've sold 222 now and I've even been told that it was the bestselling book on Guardian Books yesterday and is doing very well on Amazon.

A passing swipe

A couple of days ago I reported how John Walker, the BNP's former Treasurer, had resigned from the party in disgust at the behaviour of nick Griffin and others in the leadership. It is clear that he has no intention of remaining silent outside the party either.

In an interesting post on his facebook site, Walker launches an attack on Griffin loyalist Clive Jefferson over the Radio RWB, which Walker runs.

"Bearing in mind Radio RWB has never once broadcast anything but support for the BNP," writes Walker. "Last night Clive Jefferson instructed the BNPtv server to switch off Radio RWB. Unfortunately for the buffoon Jefferson I knew what he was up to days before and switched to a new server provided by a generous donor. So screw you Clive you swivel eyed paranoid c***!, and the rest of the cretins that infest the leadership of what was one a great party."

With the Norway massacres taking up much of my time over the past fortnight I have neglected to update people on our fundraising appeal for our campaign against the EDL march in Tower Hamlets. As you may recall we launched an appeal for £3,500 to help us pay for materials.

We initially raised £2,400 so we sent a reminder to those who had signed our petition or had donated to us online before. I'm delighted to say that we not only reached our target but have now actually more than doubled it. We have so far raised just under £8,000. We had one really generous donation for £1,000 and one each of £500 and £250, but the vast majority were £10 or less. Just over 400 people donated, 125 doing so for the first time.

These donations are enabling us to do much more in Tower Hamlets than we originally planned. We have used this money to produce a tabloid newspaper and organise nightly petitioning across the borough. The petitioning will last another week after which it will be handed in to the police. We are also producing another briefing for local political representatives in time for their next discussion with the Home Secretary in mid-August.

Next weekend we will be having a major campaign day during which we hope the bulk of our 50,000 newspapers will go out. More details of this event will go out shortly.

I'll be updating our campaign progress tomorrow but for now I would just like to give a big thank you to everyone who donated.

When the only option is to switch sides

Earlier this morning I sent out an email to our supporters urging them to buy the book written by my colleague and close friend Matthew Collins. We've already had a fantastic response with dozens of copies already sold.

This excellent book is about Matthew's life growing up on a council estate in south London in the 1980s. Disruptive at school, bored with life and alienated with a changing society around him, he was an angry young man drawn towards the race hate politics of the British far-right. They spoke his language, described a worldview he could understand and targeted opponents he could hate.

Gradually, however, Matthew began to realise that the hatred, patriotism and violence haunting him - from the playground to the pub to the ballot box - stemmed from his own demons. And so he only had one option - to change sides.

For the next three years he passed information to Searchlight from the heart of Britain's far right. This book is his compelling story.

He was forced to move to Australia after his cover was broken and his life was in danger. Ten years later he returned and ever since he has committed his life to trying to persuade others not to make the mistakes he did.

'Hate' is a great read. It is sometimes uncomfortable and challenging but it is fast, exciting and funny. Matthew refuses to hold his punches - both against his former friends in the far right and a society which he believes patronises and ignores working class people. If it could … but yes it has done.

John Walker, former party treasurer and the host of the BNP's (awful) Red White and Blue radio station has today quit the party.

And in good old fashioned BNP style, he has not gone quietly. Using his Twitter account to address the BNP's Nazi shame exposed earlier today, Walker wrote:

#NickGriffin re Sun today, not so many years ago he attended similar events. What rank hypocracy, the clear out should start with HIM!

Griffin may have had other things on his mind however. It looks as if the ever diminishing BNP funds will be taking another hit. We're hearing that Griffin lost his appeal in court today against party rebels, known as the Decembrists, which could cost more than £100,000.

I think we'll sleep very well tonight!

The fresh face of the BNP

I don't often read The Sun, but whilst waiting for a short back and sides this morning I did happen to catch its front page: No one here was surprised to see a senior BNP figure Nazi saluting, but it is good to see that something like eight million people who read that paper will now get a glimpse of what the BNP is really like when they think nobody can see or hear them.

I may even go as far as to say it was a very good piece of journalism by the paper, going all the way to Hungary to capture the BNP's true face.

As they always do, the BNP will now claim they are expelling or at least suspending their former rising star from west London. They also do this when their members (who are quickly described by the BNP as "former members") are arrested after guns and bombs are found under their beds.

For some, having another one of their leading lights exposed is just too much to handle. Claudia Dalgleish, who is the partner of the BNP's London organiser Steve Squire, is probably worried how this will affect her successful modelling business.

We hear that she and partner are seriously thinking of joining the English Democrats.

What with the current state of the BNP and the fact that a large number of their senior people appear to be going to ground, one suspects there are a few more skeletons due an airing very soon.

Going door-to-door

The HOPE not hate team was out in force in Tower Hamlets yesterday going door-to-door collecting names for our petition calling on the authorities to ban the EDL march on 3 September.

Almost 800 names were collected.

We had other teams going out to mosques last night so we expect this figure to rise.

We have activities planned for most days over the next fortnight and shortly we will be starting the delivery of 50,000 tabloid newspapers across the borough.
