BREAKING NEWS!

A little bird has told me that with 30% of the votes counted in London the BNP is on 5%. This would give them one seat on the London Assembly but a few votes less it would mean nothing.

I have no idea how true this is but I'm happy to believe it and if it is true then this is incredible. The BNP leadership was last night predicting three seats in London so this will be a humiliation for the leadership.

My source inside the corridors of power say the Green Party is on roughly the same vote. However, it could be some time before the final votes are known, not least because 10% of the votes are having to be counted by hand.

And without someone there to help to prompt him up in the GLA chamber, Londoners will really get to see what a fool the BNP's number one pick is.

hi Matthew - if one of them *does* get in, I'd be amazed to even see him in chambers given the piss-poor attendence of the vast majority of BNP members

Hi John, the BNP's number one choice isn't nicknamed "Diva" for nothing. He loves nothing than putting on a piss poor performance for his (un)adoring public.

Call me old fashioned, but I cannot be cheeful about them getting a seat on the London Assembly. Time was when we regarded it as alarming if they came second. If they get a seat on the LA it will be a real boost and all talk of getting 40 new seats will be forgotten in favour of this 'victory'. The only thing that puts a smile on my face is when they loose a seat or two like in Epping (hurray!). But here's hoping Barnbrook won't make it into City Hall

[Nick responds:

With the BNP believed to be on 5% with 30% counted there is still a chance that they will dip below the magic level before the day is out. Obviously we would want no BNP on the London Assembly but few of us really believed that there was even an outside chance of them not getting one and I guess I, like many others, feared two or even three.

I must stress, again, that this was only a rumour, though from a usually reliable source

David, you're so old fashioned......! ;) Of course you're right, it is a thoroughly unpleasant and a depressing thought. However, the BNP were expecting three seats last night and I don't think there were many in a postiion confident enough to discount that idea totally.
