Barack Obama is the new President of the United States. It is hard to comprehend what this means, not only for the US but for the rest of the world. Searchlight will be producing a special 'Extra' on the US elections and its significance in December.

While we were over in the US a couple of weeks ago Leonard Zeskind recounted a conversation with an old friend whose partner was killed during the civil rights movement. After the racist violence of the 1960s she never could have imagined that she would witness a black President in her lifetime. It is a truly remarkable day. There are clearly still many problems concerning race in the United States, and that was clear from some of the voting, but the country will never be the same again.

The BNP have always struck me as being UN-BRITISH and UN-PATRIOTIC! Why? Because they only represent a small part of British life, not all of it. Their membership is not open to all Brits. And their wish is to create a DIVIDED not united Britain, along the lines of skin colour, religion, sexuality etc.etc. Like apartheid South Africa, or right here in the UK, deeply divided Northern Ireland. Twelve thousand people have been conned into joining an organisation whose leader is on the record as saying to his shame, amongst other things, that 'power is the product of force and will, and not of rational debate' A Green party supporter in Brum.
