Yellow Wednesday

What a 24 hours it has been. Yesterday morning the BNP formally announced that Nick Griffin was standing in the North West in the European Elections. While we had long suspected this it was the final confirmation that we needed to kickstart our campaign. Within minutes we had prepared an email newsletter and fired it off to our supporters across the North West.

Then it emerged that the BNP membership list had been posted - by parties unknown - on the Internet. Worse still (for the BNP that is), several BNP members had their occupations listed. I'm not sure how the serving police officers or soldiers are going to explain that away!

Strangly, I have not seen this list. This week I have been on the road, speaking at meetings across the North. Yesterday I was in Liverpool where we had a great meeting. People seemed really fired up and eager to build a bottom-up campaign.

Just as the meeting was started I received a text from our HOPE not hate group at Manchester University saying that they had signed up 350 students to the campaign in one day. That was absolutely fabulous news. Last month we gave ourselves a target of signing up 3000 active supporters in the North West by the end of February. A few weeks later I can now announce that we have already reached 1,800.

Today is Yellow Wednesday. Manchester University HOPE not hate group is organising a day of action to build support for a motion that they are taking to the Students Union. To this end they are painting the University Yellow - quite literally. It is a long time since I did any student campaigning but I have to say that I'm really looking forward to today.

It's now 6am and I'm scratching around to find something yellow to wear....
