English Democrats win in Doncaster

posted by: Nick Lowles | on: Friday, 5 June 2009, 15:04

Peter Davies of the English Democrats has won the Doncaster Mayoral election. When the second preference votes were allocated he received 25,344 votes compared to the Independent's 24,990.

This is a major disaster. While not fascist, the English Democrats run on a right wing nationalist ticket.

This IS a major disaster for Doncaster. The only conciliation is that, having heard him speak on BBC Radio Sheffield, seems to be pretty unprepared, and at the mercy of the snake-pit called Doncaster politics. His whole thing seems to centre on the kind of pub-rant which has caught a wave, about common-sense (surely the original scoundrels' bolthole) with reducing Council tax. Well, good luck with the tax thing. Thanks to the Government's handling of the economy and subsequent bailout, we will all be paying more tax for a while, and this will certainly impact on Council Tax bills. And, with an economic downturn on the go, more people not less will be using the statutory services the Council has to provide... And "common sense". Looking at the manifesto supplied before the election, it just seems a way of continuing certain stereotypes about Doncaster. As an example, take his desire to end translation services. We already know that uptake of Council services among minorities is low, at least partly due to a language barrier. So rather than increase English language services, he just plans to cut translation - a move which the Government anyway ordered some two years ago (see: http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/communities/pdf/580274.pdf). -or- "the provision of council houses for deserving local people". Again, this is what the Council is required to do anyway, and already gives priority to local applicants. Or is "local" code for non-British? Just how homeless would a family have to be to qualify if they come from, say, Rotherham? Or Romania? So, the Peter principle: has this man got any idea about putting services into place, except for the comfortable residents of Bessacarr? I doubt it.

Peter Davies now says he intends to cut funding for this year's Gay Pride as part of his purge on 'political correctness'. I always thought too little political correctness is too much ignorance bigotry and prejudice. No wonder the far Right are always harping on about it....

Hi guys I hope you don't mind a right leaning Libertarian dropping by to have a quick word. I agree with what you say about the EDP and the new Mayor. I've written about this phenomenon several times on my blog, this particular article focussing specifically on several of Davies' policies. http://www.boatangdemetriou.com/2009/06/rise-of-idiot-right-series.html Hope you don't mind me providing the link. kind regards JD
