We’ve done it

The BNP has been humiliated in Barking & Dagenham and Stoke-on-Trent and a huge thank you must go out to everyone who has got involved in the HOPE not hate campaign. We estimate that almost 1,000 people participated in the campaign in Barking & Dagenham over the last few months and 2-300 involved in our campaign in Stoke-on-Trent.
In the last ten days of the campaign alone we have distributed over 130,000 pieces of literature in Barking & Dagenham. There was material for pensioners, black and Asian voters, young voters, women voters and male voters who had been identified as opposing the BNP. We did attack leaflets, positive leaflets and polling day cards to turnout our anti-BNP voters. On Monday 385 people delivered 55,000 leaflets and even yesterday, on polling day, we had 175 people out knocking up the vote.
We played a major part in a highly successful campaign. The BNP is divided and defeated and the results in Barking & Dagenham and Stoke-on-Trent will have an impact on both the fascists and our own campaign in the months to come.
It’s been a great few months and it has been a pleasure to work alongside some really great people. You never know, we could well be having to do all this again in a few months.
ps, what has the HOPE not hate campaign meant for you? We are putting together some campaign stories for the next issue of Searchlight so drop me a line with your views: nick@hopenothate.org.uk

Congratulations to all involved, you have done a great job. So that's 2 positive stories from the election: Hope Not Hate has defeated the BNP, and there's a Green MP in Brighton.

Thanks to all the volunteers and all the people who have been working on Hope not Hate, you have done more to keep us safe in Barking than the police could have after a BNP win.

A fantastic result! Congratulations to Nick and everyone who worked so hard! You can a classic anti-fascist campaign but with the use of 21st century technology. I really enjoyed telephone canvassing in Barking despite living two hundred miles away! This has deflated the Nazi's balloon! And yes, we're ready to do it all again in a few months time!

And get this...BNP Barking vote 2005 16.7%. In 2010 14.6%. Their vote has gone DOWN by nearly 2% in their Number One seat! That's a fantastic piece of statistics and, of course whilst congrats are due to Margaret Hodge, it is a resounding victory for HOPE over racism fascism and hate. Barking people are NOT racist (I'm married to an Eastender) and this goes to prove that! Also congratulations to Simon Marcus of the Conservatives for beating Griffin into third place. Democracy is the sure fire winner in Barking (as it is in another former BNP power base - Burnley) and the Conservatives are central to that in making up the balance there. And nuff respect to Nick Lowles Gerry Gable and the team from HnH for their best ever anti fascist election effort yet! Take a bow!!!!

Well done everyone who has been involved in this campaign! Such tireless campaigning and all worth it in the end. The BNP defeated in the two seats they hoped to gain and their party in disarray. A tremendous success - thank you all so much!!!! It was so important what you did.

Just wanted to say congratulations to the hope not hate team and everyone who took part in this campaign - you give us all hope in the future of the UK's amazingly diverse society and shows we haven't forgotten how to stand up and fight in the face of facism. I've not been in the country but have watched and supported from a far with bated breath. THANK YOU!

Well done to both you and the BNP. WIthout the BNP raising issues there would not have been the changed in Dialogue with the top 3 parties on the issues effecting the people in this area. Without you the BNP may have got in. Same coin, different sides.

CONGRATULATIONS - WHAT A CAMPAIGN!! Good news from South Yorkshire, the BNP didn't win a single seat in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham or Sheffield and are down to 1 councillor in Rotherham (uncontested this time - we'll get rid of the vermin next time). Particularly gratifying as Rotherham and Barnsley were both targets for the fascists

One of the best moments of election night seeing the arrogant Nick Griffin getting the thumbs down by the Barking voters.
Comment 22 | From: David Tittle | Date: 7 May 2010, 21:59
Well done you guys. We should not be complacent but I think for now they are finished. It is a shame there are no European elections for a while otherwise we could clean this smear off the face of our nation completely.
