A worrying development

The EDL is hell-bent on violence
The EDL is hell-bent on violence

A hundred EDL supporters turned up unannounced in Oldham town centre yesterday in a worryingly new development. While they ostensibly claimed to be marking the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and indeed they did lay a wreath, the nature of their mobilisation could be a sign of things to come.

The EDL met up in the Greaves Arms and marched through Oldham town centre to the local cenotaph where they laid a wreath and held a two minutes silence. Among those there were a number of current and former BNP members, including Griffin’s former bodyguard and convicted drug dealer Jock Shearer. The police moved in to break up the gang and they were met with a volley of glasses and bottles. A number of people were served with dispersal orders (Section 27 of the Public Order Act) which banned them from the town for 24 hours.

It was clear that many EDL supporters are becoming increasing frustrated at how the police have contained them in recent protests, not least in Bradford, where they were penned in by police and an eight foot wall. A growing number seem keen to just go it alone with spontaneous actions.

I’m nervous about where this is all going and I fear a growing cycle of both targeted and indiscriminate violence by EDL supporters. Some are actively hunting down their opponents, including myself, while actions like we saw yesterday in Oldham could spark off real violence within communities. And of course violence is what these people are after.

I'd just like to point out that the Greaves Arms is e few feet away from the cenotaph, so if they had a march, it was a very small one!

If these thugs are actually looking for you, make sure you're carrying some kind of anti-scum spray.

The have police proved to be unwilling to contain the EDL, the break out in Bradford is the latest example. The Police will not pursue the EDL when they 'pursue' and threaten anti racists and anti fascists like yourself. Consequently there is an urgent need to redevelop a strategy of reliance on the police to 'deal with the EDL' A wider united campaign is needed.

Maybe you should not have labelled them as Nazi's and fascists because they objected to our squaddies being insulted and wanted to vent their frustration. Maybe just maybe you will come to understand that it may have been wiser to let them hold their first protest in Luton and not have sided with the idiots that insulted our squaddies.

Just because YOU hate the BNP the majority in this country never give them a seconds thought except to call them idiots. You have a no platform policy which is childish and very insulting because you somehow think the British are too thick to work things out for themselves that they need the likes of you to guide them.

GET REAL!! WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO IS DEMONISE ANYONE WHO IS NOT ON THE LEFT POLITICALLY BECAUSE SOME ON THE FAR RIGHT JOIN NATIONALIST AND PATRIOTIC GROUPS WHO BTW HAVE TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY AND EVEN FOUGHT COMBAT 18.

I read both left and right blogs/news and see that even at the last protest when they turned on a REAL Nazi it was reported as "internal conflict". It's not internal at all IMO but people who put you to shame because they confront all fascism/racism whereas you DEMAND the BNP/NFers who have a table offering leaflets in any town center to be confronted but when it came to the Muslim fascists you say they are only TINY amount so should not be confronted!

whatever HAPPENED TO CONFRONTING IT WHEREVER YOU FIND FASCISM?

What gave people the Idea that Jihadi extremists are allowed and protected when spewing hate? YOU DID WHEN YOU SIDED WITH THEM IN BOLTON AFTER OUR SQUADDIES WERE ABUSED..

You divide more than you unite!
