The EDL is becoming more violent
I've just heard news that 20 to 30 EDL thugs attacked a Socialist Workers Party meeting in Newcastle this evening. Two doormen were beaten but there are no reports of any arrests.
Earlier today two EDL supporters were arrested in Gateshead which led to an EDL demo outside the local police station.

Why are these thugs protected by the police.

Because the police are thugs, too?

The EDL are what the Nazis were in the 1920s. They must be stopped!

These EDL and in scotland SDL (is there a welsh brand?) are dispicable. This is surely something the left can come together to sort out. Well done the citizens of Glasgow who ousted. the Nazis at the weekend.

Our point exactly, using violence on meetings of opposition political organisations was what the National Socialists used to do in Germany in the 1930s. Yes, the EDL are doing what comes naturally to them and I hope that the Leicester Mercury picks up on this story.

EDL attacks on Left Wing meetings are becoming more violent and frequent. This reminds me of the early eighties when groups like the BM and NF would attack meetings.

I'll bet 90% of their fathers and grand fathers were Socialists. However, in the case of the SWP, I say, the enemy of the enemy is not always your friend!

So do you still think it's wrong to organise opposition to the EDL? Do you still think we shoud allow them to walk all over us and worse still attack and intimidate members of ethnic and religious minorities, relying only on the forces of the state to contain them?

Sarah, I don't think anyone at HOPE not hate ever considered it wrong to organise opposition to the EDL. In fact opposing the EDL is one of Hnh's main activities these days. The form that opposition takes has to be tailored to the specific event/community/locality that the EDL are attacking, and must take into account the feelings of local people who will be the ones left to pick up the pieces after any event occurs. In Bradford we weren't "relying only on the forces of the state to contain them", but we did work very hard to ensure that the "forces of the state" actually did what they are supposed to do i.e. protect ordinary decent citizens.

Good some EDL Nazi thugs have been seen by the police for what they are.
