HOPE not hate

See it Report It

#SeeItReportIt

Much has been written in the media over the last few weeks about how extremist groups use social media to spread messages of intolerance, bigotry, hatred and extremism. From ISIS’s beheading images to short anti-Muslim films deliberately designed to offend Muslims, there is too much hate on the internet.

Questions have been asked as to whether social media companies are doing enough to take down content that most of us would find offensive and abhorrent, but we believe that rather than rely on others to do this, we all need to share the responsibility.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with some key community groups to launch See It, Report It; a website that provides an invaluable, simple, step-by-step guide on how to report worrying content that you come across on the internet. There’s a guide for each social media platform, and the process is easy to follow.

It is not right that acts of extreme violence, the deaths of innocent people and other terrorist activity can be shared and promoted online in a way that leads to hatred, division and fear. We are passionate believers in liberty and free speech, but with freedom comes responsibilities. Just as we have laws and mechanisms to shut down and report child pornography, so we need the means to prevent extremists from using social networks to propagate their hatred and encourage violence.

We need to take action now to ensure that all social media platforms are safe environments. If we don't expect to find this extreme violence and hatred in magazines in newsagents then why should we be subjected to them on the internet?

But don't just cross your fingers and hope someone else will report it - take responsibility and log on to www.seeitreportit.org now.
