Racist brawler loses fight against conviction

A MAN who brawled with a fellow visitor at Chesterfield Royal Hospital after hurling racist abuse has lost his fight against his conviction and sentence.
Martin Glasgow was found guilty of affray last March and jailed for 12 months. The 49-year-old had become involved in the violent incident with Amandip Johal.

Both men stood trial at Derby Crown Court, but Mr Johal, a solicitor, was acquitted of affray.

The jury accepted his case that he had acted in self defence.

At London's Court of Appeal, Glasgow, whose address was not revealed, challenged his conviction as "unsafe", and his sentence as "manifestly excessive".

His defence claimed the trial judge had misdirected the jury during his summing up.

But Mr Justice Foskett, sitting with Lady Justice Hallett and Judge Morris QC at the Appeal Court, rejected any possible appeal as "unarguable".

The court heard that Glasgow and Mr Johal were both making unrelated visits to a coronary ward at the hospital on June 5, 2006.

Now the BNP is threatening to gain a majority on Barking and Dagenham council, in east London, and Griffin is trying to become MP for Barking. The party is also faced with defending 30 of its council seats in 2010, which gives anti-fascists an opportunity to oust them.
