Blackburn with Darwen hit the ground running
Hope Not Hate North West by Nick | Wednesday, 21 January 2009
Forty six activists braved the elements to kick start the local campaign to stop Nick Griffin in the European election in Blackburn with Darwen. Trade unions, political activists and faith groups were all represented, with many turning up for the first time. The Hope Not Hate North West strategy was outlined and discussed and a plan of activity was drawn up running right up to June. People left at the end fired up and determined to boost the turnout.
Of particular importance is ensuring Muslim voters turn out to stop a party that would come down on them with an iron fist. Blackburn has the second largest Muslim vote in the region. The previous week, 10,000 people had attended an event about Gaza in the town. There was a determination to use the same networks to motivate people to vote to stop Griffin. The local group also faces Town Council elections in Darwen and obviously there will be work here if the BNP stands.
A former MEP told the meeting that Griffin would be able to spread his racist poison with impunity if elected.
