HOPE not hate / Searchlight by Cathy Pound | Monday, 5 October 2009
Campaigning against racism and the BNP was at the top of the agenda this weekend in Glasgow at the 13th Scottish TUC Black Workers' Conference.
Speaking before the conference Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary, said: "With the next general election quickly approaching, the STUC will ensure, in the light of increased BNP activity following the European election, that combating racism and discrimination are high on the political agenda."
Conference delegates passed a motion noting their "grave concern" that the Scottish Defence League were planning to hold a demonstration in Glasgow on Saturday 14 November 2009 and called for those opposed to the SDL to act as one to defeat their aim of stirring up fear and hatred towards the Muslim community.
"That this Conference notes with grave concern the forming of the Scottish Defence League and its intention to hold a demonstration in Glasgow on Saturday 14th November 2009.
Conference calls on all those opposed to the SDL to work together to act as one community to defeat the attempts of the SDL to whip up fear and hatred towards the Muslim community.
Conference further calls on the STUC to support means of opposing the SDL, in order that the violence and fear they extol do not create battles on our street and do not further the SDL's racist aims."
