Torbay by-election

The BNP is now standing in so many council by-elections that it is becoming difficult to keep track. One we missed during the run-up to the June European and council elections was the Torbay council by-election in Roundham with Hyde ward on 20 May 2004.
Michael Turner came a very poor sixth out of eight candidates with 6.2%. Turner, 64, who lives in Brixham, is a retired civil servant who worked for 40 years in the stamp duty office. He told a local paper that if elected he would pressurise the council to address the problems of "high councillor wages", car park charges, toilet closures and untidy roads.
One way to tidy up the roads anywhere is to keep the BNP off them.
No wonder the BNP did not report the result.
