BNP trounced in Stoke mayoral poll
| Friday, 6 May 2005 Source: Searchlight
The BNP has failed to go through to the second round of the Stoke mayoral election. Steve Batkin came fourth in the first round behind the Labour and Conservative candidates and the former mayor who styles himself "Supporting Green Shoots".
The BNP had pinned its main hopes on the mayoral poll, which took place alongside the general election. But a strong local anti-fascist campaign, assisted by Searchlight, left the BNP very disappointed.
The failure followed the BNP's poor showing in the general election. The fascist party was hoping for several second places or good third places but even after throwing everything it had into its targets seats it could only manage one third place – Barking – with just 16.9 per cent of the vote, the BNP's biggest percentage vote. Only three of the BNP's 118 candidates got more than 10 per cent.
The general election and Stoke mayoral election results show that people all over the country are rejecting the BNP's lies and politics of hate.
