THE BRITISH National Party has withdrawn its bid to gain power in Burton Town Hall for the first time.
The party, widely criticised for its policies and views on immigration and wanting a white-only Britain, had put forward Alan Hewitt as a candidate for the forthcoming Stapenhill by-election.
However, he has now pulled out, with no reason given for the withdrawal.
The election is being held to determine the successor to former Labour councillor Doug Haw, who resigned after being charged with separate, unconnected offences of criminal damage, assault and causing actual bodily harm to an 83-year-old woman.
The remaining three candidates are Mary Crowley for the Conservatives, Michael Key for Labour and Philip Lancaster for the UK Independence Party.
