Racists target Tyrone

Anti-racism activists have vowed to fight efforts by a British-based, race-hate group bent on stoking up tension in a Co Tyrone town.

Daily Ireland has learned that members of the British National Party (BNP) claim they travelled to Dungannon, Co Tyrone earlier this month and blitzed the district with race-hate literature.

It is estimated that one fifth of Dungannon's population is comprised of migrant workers who are employed at several large poultry companies dotted around the town.

The migrant workers, who are mainly from eastern Europe, are largely welcomed into the local community and are viewed by many as vital for the continued growth of the local economy. In recent weeks however, race-hate campaigners from the BNP have attempted to gain a foothold in the traditionally tolerant Dungannon district.

Hate-filled literature circulated by the BNP has accused foreign nationals of contributing to an increase in crime in the area.
