Dear friend,

The local elections are now only two weeks away. The BNP has dominated the news in the past four days and are increasingly confident that they will make a signigicant breakthrough. Nowhere is this confidence higher than in Barking & Dagenham.

It is clear that in the minds of the media, and now the BNP, Barking & Dagenham is the front line.

For the past 15 months Searchlight has worked closely with the local Labour Party to dispel the racist myths peedled by the BNP and convince voters not to back them. We believe we were firmly winning.

The current publicity has given the BNP a new lease of life but we still have the energy, focus and determination to beat them everywhere in the borough.

What we need are bodies. We have thousands of leaflets, newspapers and personally-addressed direct mail letters to deliver, we are running our most sophisticated campaign ever.

But to make it successful we need people to help us on the ground. We can win, but only if we re-double our efforts. Please look at the campaign diary below and try to attend as many activities as you can. Please also send this around to your friends and colleagues and encourage them to get involved.

There is no point waking up on 5 May and wringing our hands about BNP gains in Barking & Dagenham if we have not done everything in our power to stop them.

For those who are unable to attend these events but want to get involved then please help with our telephone banks. In the 48 hours before polling Searchlight is setting up a series of telephone banks around the country to remind our 33,000 identified anti-BNP voters to turn out on 4 May.

I look forward to seeing you during the next fortnight.

Nick Lowles
