Abrupt end to BNP election wins

After gaining 32 new councillors on 4 May, the BNP reverted back to its usual form by losing two by-elections. In Scarborough's Stepney ward on 11 May, Patricia Scott gained 154 votes (12.5%) for the BNP, coming fifth out of six candidates in an election won by the Green Party.
In Tangmere ward in Chichester the following week, a BNP candidate captured a mere 41 votes (6.5%) coming third out of five candidates in an election in which the Conservative beat the Liberal Democrat by just three votes.
