THE British National Party has put up a candidate for the vacant Skerton West ward on Lancaster City Council.

Christopher Lawrence Hill, of Thirlmere Road in Lancaster, will stand for the BNP in the by-election on June 22.

It is believed to be the first time a candidate for the right-wing party has stood for election in the city.

Other candidates are Debbie Jane Buck, of Fairfield Road in Heysham, for the Conservative Party and Robert Paul Smith, of Bowerham Road in Lancaster, for the Labour Party.

The vacancy was created by the recent sad death of Coun Janet Horner, who had represented the ward since 1957.
