A BNP candidate came fourth out of five in a council election in Hartlepool's Brus ward on 8 June. The contest had been postponed from 4 May because of a candidate's death.
In a low 18.4% turnout, Labour held the seat comfortably despite a 3.1% swing to the Liberal Democrats since June 2004, when all three council seats were up for election.
The UK Independence Party urged its supporters to vote for the independent candidate.
