No room for racists

It seems that Chris Beverley, the BNP's sole Leeds councillor, has been having difficulty booking rooms for what he describes as "a private meeting for 100 or so people".
When Beverley, who sits for Morley South ward, approached Churwell Community Centre, officers told him that its constitution prevents it letting rooms to racists. Unconfirmed reports say that he approached the centre, which is in Morley North where BNP support is low, after failing to secure a venue in his own ward.
Local speculation has it that Beverley is planning to invite Nick Griffin, the BNP leader, to speak. Bookings secretaries in Morley are now on their guard against BNP attempts to book a room under another name, a deception the party often uses to get round bans on racists.
The BNP might have more trouble than before in finding anywhere. There is trepidation in the party at stories that a number of brewers are making their licensees sign contracts agreeing not to let rooms to extremist groups.
