Police probe BNP ‘fraud’ claims

In what's turning out to be the dirtiest local election in Birmingham for years, The Stirrer can reveal that the police are investigating allegations of fraud against the BNP – claims which the party has strenuously denied.

As we revealed yesterday, the Lib Dems have raised questions about the validity of signatures on the far-right party's nomination forms in seven inner city wards.

We spoke to a Jamaican woman in Handsworth and East Lozells whose name appears on one of their candidates' official papers but who denied ever having signed it; she says that it must have been forged.

Since then, we've been contacted by Abid Hussain whose father's name also appears on the candidate's nomination form - this time in Aston.

Abid admits that his Dad signed it, but says he was misled into thinking he was signing up to a petition calling for improvement to the local area without realising that he was endorsing the BNP.

These, and various other complaints, are now in the in-tray of DC Mick Easton of the Economic Crime Unit pending his investigations.
