A Leading Welsh language campaign group has condemned the BNP's attempts to enter the Welsh language debate. Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg has publicly denounced the British National Party's political broadcasts in Welsh.

These will be screened on television in the build-up to the June 10 European and local elections.

The chairman of Cymdeithas Huw Lewis said: "As an organisation that campaigns non-violently for the future of communities in every part of Wales, we see no place at all for the BNP's racist agenda and we condemn their attempt to use Wales as a tool to further such fascist ideas. We call on all political parties to refuse to share a platform with the BNP and call on the people of Wales to reject this racist message."

Ian Titherington, a spokesman for Wales Friends of Searchlight, which campaigns against racism and fascism, said: "We welcome the strong stance taken by Cymdeithas Iaith Gymraeg."
